Alberta Cup #3 and #4 Races and AWG Trials a rousing success (Jan. 2007)

A big thank you from the race organizers for everyone's help to pulloff a very successful Alberta Cup Race. Lot's of positive responsesfrom the TD, coaches and most of all, the racers. Everyone had a greattime. This is a super prelude to the AWG 2010.

This hasbeen a huge confidence booster. We will do at least one more major racebefore the AWG 2010. Perhaps the Canadian Westerns.

We will keep you on our volunteer list and look forward to the next big party.See you then!

Regular Lodge Hours Start this Weekend (October 2007)

The Lodge will be open this weekend (Dec 8,9)  from 10:00am until 5pm, Sat and Sun.

Following this weekend, the lodge will resume it's normal operating hours:

  • Mon - Fri  10:00am until 9pm (trail lights will be on)
  • Sat & Sun 10:00am until 5pm

The Chix on Sticks meet Mondays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

A reminder about the WNSC Complimentary Skis

For those of you using complementary skis, please read through your Care of your WNSC Skis pamphlet.  More pamphlets are available at the lodge.   One of the most important tips is to find a carpeted area and try the skis on prior to arriving to the ski club.   Then, when you are on snow and you experience difficulty putting the skis on, you'll know they work and the most likely culprit is snow & ice build-up on the toe of the boot or the binding.  The tip of a ski pole or a key can be used to scrape the ice out.

Always transport skis packaged together, there are lots of elastics at the ski club.

Wapiti Nordic Trails Under Attack? (Summer 2007)

How much do you love our trails?  Would a 4 lane highway through the middle of our facility enhance your recreational experience?

Please read the attached editorial for more information.

You are strongly urged to contact
Lovatt Planning Consulting to express your views about the proposed route for the Highway 40/43 bypass connector. Do it today before it's too late.

Update on the situation - July 12, 2006

Update May 3, 2007 - The best information that we now have seems to indicate that the latest proposed routing will have little or no impact on our trails.

Update - Aug 7, 2007

Hello Grant,

Thanks for the note. We will be coming back out for the last Open House
in mid September (dates to be confirmed)with a final recommended plan. I
am not at liberty to share the final plan with you, but I can advise
that in our effort to come up with a final recommendation we have
avoided retracing past steps that we learned through our past
interactions with stakeholders to be problematic. I am confident that
the Club will find the final recommendation acceptable.

Best Regards

Wapiti Loppet a Roaring Success (March 2007)

Congratulations to the organizers and volunteers for a very successful Loppet on March 18.  A special congratulations to the many first time loppeteers.  Out on the course, we had 77 skiers, one moose and 2 lynx.  No wonder Mike Stern (from Edmonton Nordic) turned in such a fast time.  It was great to see all of the folks down from High Level as well as Edmonton Nordic and our perennial favourite Irvin Servold.

Webmaster's Note:  A big shout out to Pene-Lope for "chicking" the entire field.  We of the male gender are forever humbled - you rule!

Thanks to Casino Workers (Feb 2007)

Thanks to all of the volunteers for braving the elements and getting to the casino. We were pleased that our casino was not canceled due to the storm. We appreciate the spares who came in to cover for Harvey, who was called to emergency services and Terry who was marooned out in Beaverlodge. It was a nasty blizzard.

We should hear at the end of the quarter how well we made out. I understand that the Casino funds have been pretty lucrative over the past year.

Thanks again.

Becky Scott Visits WNSC (March 2007)

Just before 9:00 this past Saturday morning, the WNSC lodge was crowded with Jackrabbits anxiously waiting for the arrival of Beckie Scott. They were soon rewarded with their first chance to meet Olympian Beckie as she walked into the lodge. Very shortly afterwards Beckie was seated and was the center of attention as she was surrounded by the kids, and adults, who had a chance to ask her a wide variety of questions about her skiing career.

Beckie was wonderful in this setting and had a great rapport with the kids. Following the question period, Beckie took time to autograph photos. BeforeBeckie left she had a chance to look around the lodge and stadium and was very impressed with our facilities. She said it was as good as some of the venues in Europe where she had raced. So it was a great opportunity for everyone to meet Beckie.

Special thanks to Andy Beal who helped to sponsorthe event

Dealing with walkers and snowshoers (Jan 2007)

I know it is frustrating when you come upon snowshoers and walkers using our groomed trails.  Because we have a lot of new people in town, they may not be aware that snowshoeing (or walking) is not allowed on the trails.  We need to give them the benefit of the doubt (the first time).   I would ask that you approach them politely and tell them that the trails are for skiing only.  You could hand them a free day pass or say "go to the canteen and Sharon will fix you up with a complementary day pass" - just let her know that "Your Name" sent you.

These are prospective customers and new members.  They already know how to get to the trails, they just need to go to know how to get to the lodge so that they can join.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Burgess Memorial a huge success (September 2005)

A course record and a few close misses were among the highlights of the *2005 Steve Burgess Memorial Cross Country Running Race *at the Wapiti Nordic Centre on Saturday, Sept 17.

Sixteen year old *Deneb Carias* from Grimshaw destroyed the field in the High School Boys 4 km race, clocking a course record time of 14:25.  Carias finished 85 seconds ahead of runner-up *Justin Black* from Dawson Creek.

Grovedale's *Penny Thompson* was equally dominant in the womens 7.5 km, stopping the clock at 30:36.  Thompson finished 5 minutes ahead of Grande Prairie's *Lee Ann Nessman.  *Only *Jenna Huber*, who clocked 29:33 in 2001, has ever run the women's 7.5 km course more quickly.

Two other GPRC rookie runners also posted performances of note.  *Sean Hawyrluk* won the open mens 7.5 km in 26:34 and *Janelle Williamson* finished first in the open womens 4 km in 17:00.  Those performances moved both Hawyrluk and Williamson to #4 on the all time Wapiti Nordic Cross Country course list.

Weekly Dryland Training on Tap (September 2004)

It's that time of year again, time to dust off those old ski poles and start dryland training.  I heard a rumour that there will be 2 feet of snow arriving (and staying) on Oct 31st this year. That only leaves us with 6 weeks to get in shape for the ski season.

There will be 2 informal weekly group workout sessions for you to attend. These are drop-in style sessions so no sign up is necessary (although call ahead if you would like to borrow a pair of roller skis).

Thursdays 5:00-6:00pm,
Meet just before the bridge at the WNSC nordic center (as in previous years).  We will be doing Ski Walking and Ski Striding.  The only thing you need is a pair of shoes and classic length poles (poles are not necessary for Ski Walking).  No experience required, I will give a lesson to anyone who wants to learn!  This workout goes rain or shine!

Saturday 10:00am,
Meet at the gate to Saskatoon Island Park (follow signs to S-toon Lake Park, 2.5mi north of divided hwy just east of Wembley).  We will be roller skiing on the quiet, smooth, 2.5 mile stretch of pavement you drive on to get to Saskatoon Island Park.  WNSC has a number of both classic and skating roller skis that are for club members to use.  You will need to bring ski boots and poles for the technique you will be doing (bring your own roller skis if you
have them).  Myself or one of the other coaches will be there to give a lesson in roller skiing to anyone who wants one.  We need dry pavement to roller ski so this group workout will be a little weather dependant.

All of these sessions are free of charge for Wapiti Nordic Ski Club members!

If you have any questions give me a shout at 876-0876.  Or just show up! I will be at most of these workouts.

Call for Volunteers (January 2003)

There's little time for reading newsletters now...
Have you seen the new dump of snow?
Everyone here has gone skiing.

But wait a second...
There's still a great need for your help!

For instance ...
Are you interested in being part of  weekday evenings, Gate Closing Team? One evening per week, a different volunteer is required to come out, go skiing and then close the lodge and lock the gate. Come on ... gimme an email or phone call.

Or, how about this...
We need a helper or two, with flair, (and we know you are there), to coordinate a few social events during the course of the ski season. Like the rockin' family Moonlight Tours!!!  (Hot Chocolate and disco tunes blasting into the night sky is such a grooove) Or, Deep night Forest Trails brightly lit during the Lantern Tour!!! Come on ... gimme an email or phone call.

Well, what about this...
Joining team, 'Whacky Weekenders Lodge Helpers'!!!  Yea Baby! Yer there now.... Like, Meeting 'n Greeting for a few hours shift. Sizing up for ski renters, Stoke the fire... Schmooze over hot chocolate. Be the ever available WNSC phone voice. Come on ... gimme an email or phone call.

And those numbers are ...
gourlay@cablerocket.com  or 539 - 5167 (ask for Greg or leave a message)

President’s Message – Gordon Meyers (January 2003)

Whew!!  I have to admit I was a bit depressed as the sunny snowless days rolled by.  A few hard-core skiers spent a day on the snow-covered ice of Two Lakes and another at Pierre Grey Lakes.  These were good ski days but very short–lived snow conditions (snow today, gone tomorrow).

My spirits lifted when I received e-mails from leaders who were organizing the volunteers for packing and grooming our trails.  The 20 cm of the good stuff  on January 19th will get our winter programs back on track, and hopefully we will get enough snow to carry us into late  March.  Carl Diehl, our staffer, and our grooming volunteers will do a great job of getting the trails in shape, so get on your skis and make up for the lost month!

One program that just keeps going is Biathlon.  These dozen keen skiers trained each week despite the poor snow.  They did have to cancel hosting the Alberta Cup series scheduled for Grande Prairie. on January 10-11, but are competing in Camrose and elsewhere in the weeks ahead.  Many thanks to Michael Morgan and Rick Watson for their enthusiastic leadership.

The WNSC executive met the 3rd Wednesday of the month ( as they do regularly) and came up with an idea to build momentum for next winter’s programs.  We decided to run some fun events on Sundays during October and November.  The events are yet to be planned, so if you have a good idea, let us know.

Adult Ski Lessons (December 2002)

The club offers adult ski lessons at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels based on demand.  Lessons are offered in both Classical and Skate Skiing techniques.  Lessons start in January 2003 on Tuesday evenings or Saturday afternoons.  Fees will be collected on the day of lessons.  All participants must provide their own ski equipment.  Rentals are available at the ski lodge.

Call Shirley at 539-0716 for further information or sign up at the Lodge. Also please call Shirley if you are willing to volunteer as an instructor.

For full details about lessons, click here

Cold Weather Policy (December 2002)

If the temperature drops below –30C degrees the Wapiti Nordic Centre facilities, including the Steve Cooper Lodge and main parking lot, will be closed.  Skiers are advised not to ski at temperatures below –30 C.

Most WNSC programs will be cancelled or postponed at temperatures ranging between –20 C to –30 C.  Check with your program’s director to find out the specific temperature cut-off for your activity

Dry Land Camp Successful (December 2002)
by Dave Kay

On October 25,26 and 27 our club hosted Eric DeNys, Cross Country Alberta’s Provincial Coach, who delivered a super weekend of instruction in dry-land preparation for cross country ski racing.

Eric is currently the Head coach at the Foothills Cross Country Ski Club and has recently been named the Head Coach of Team Alberta for the Canada Winter Games. Cross Country Alberta sponsored the camp by flying Eric to Grande Prairie.

The Dry Land Camp included a overview of monitoring for cross country ski training, a unique introduction to the development of skiing technique without snow, core strength training and a healthy bout of roller skiing analysis. We had eleven skiers participate with the Biathlon Team attending on mass. This Dry Land Camp was a novel glimpse of training methods for ski racing which could be used by any skier at any level.

Pictured below are Blaine Richter (left) and Peter Watson (with skis) and Eric DeNys (right).

Trail News - Eric Chislett (December 2002)

Improvements to the South Blue Trail & the new Burgess Course
Much work was done this summer to make our South and Centre Blue Trails more enjoyable. As well the South Blue Trail has been extended to form the new Burgess Course. This course honors the late Steve Burgess, who in addition to being our president for many years was a great inspiration to many young and old skiers and runners in this area. The course is marked in kilometers.

For those interested in tracking how far they’ve skied we have the following trails measured, with all distances starting and ending at the Steve Cooper Lodge.
1. Biathlon Trail 1.5 km. (to the end of the biathlon stadium & back).
2. Return Trail A  3 km
3. Return Trail B  4.5 km
4. South Blue       6.5 km
5. Burgess Course   10 km    (add Centre Blue  +4.5 km)

Donation of Equipment and Time for Trail Improvements
The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club received donations of equipment, fuel, transportation and operation of a D6 Caterpillar on Sept 19 – 24 for improvements to our trails. We are confident their contributions will be appreciated by all of our members this winter. Our thanks to:

  • Finning Rentals  - Eric Shopland
  • Gary Boyd – Operator
  • Alberta North Petroleum – Shell Bulk
  • Marks Hauling
Future Trail Enhancements
The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club is committed to continually improving its ski trails to make our sport more enjoyable to all. The Trails Committee meets 2 or 3 times a year to discuss problems and to decide on specific projects. If you have any particular concerns (problems and/or solutions), please let me know. Also please call me(814-7576) or e-mail if you wish to be on the committee, or to help out with next summer’s work. In the next newsletter there will be a questionnaire regarding trail usage and your favorite trails

President’s Message - Gordon Meyers (December 2002)

Are you getting ready for the ski season?   When you are out for a run or walk, are you thinking about how good it will feel to start skiing without sore muscles or burning lungs? The club is prepared for their best ever season—the executive members gave reports at the fall general meeting for each of their areas of responsibility.   Wow, are we ready!

Eric Chislett, as Trail Director has been busy this summer upgrading trails, particularly the blue trails to the north of the lodge.  Eric reported a need to upgrade the trails in 65 places and accomplished an astounding 60!  A huge thanks to Eric and his crew of volunteers, including 3 days of donated crawler tractor work.   The summer runners, bikers, and walkers will be familiar with these changes and the skiers will soon enjoy the improvements.

We welcome back Carl Diehl as our staff person for the Dec 1- March 31 time  period.  He has proven to be a reliable, resourceful employee looking after the buildings and trails, and acting as our ambassador to folks who use the trails.
